The Ultimate Christmas Playlist

Well it’s December which means turning our thoughts towards Christmas, and as we love playlists at FashionWorked we thought we’d make you an awesome Christmas playlist. It mixes up some of those old faves alongside some of the more esoteric selections that I just love.

Fairytale Of New York – The Pogues Feat Kirsty McCall

The best Christmas song EVER, no question.

All I Want For Christmas Is You – Mariah Carey

Get ready to have a dance and belt it diva style to the back of the room, Mariah nailed it with this track earlier in her career, it’s not Christmas without it.

Santa Claus – The Sonics

For a few this may be a new listen but it’s epically perfect capturing all that was great about music in the 1960’s, and who doesn’t like to rock out by the tree?

Merry Chritmas (I Don’t Want To Fight) – The Ramones

Back in the day everyone did a Christmas song, and being in the greatest US punk band ever just meant you did it in a leather jacket and with loud guitars.

Mary’s Boy Child – Boney M

Becaue if I didn’t put this in my mother may never speak to me again. It transports me back to my childhood, playing in the background while we did presents and Dad made cocktails for any adults in the house that year.

Christmas In Hollis – Run DMC

Because if you don’t like Run DMC I’m not sure we can be friends. Also who couldn’t love a Hip Hop track about bumping into Santa

8 Days Of Christmas – Destiny’s Child

Pretty sure all the way through the 2000’s spending Christmas with Destiny’s Child was pretty high up on the list of things I wanted from Santa. It mentions excitement about getting a CD, does that make it retro?

Driving Home For Christmas – Chris Rea

A terrible musician with a terrible song, but it wouldn’t be the season of goodwill without it would it? This is dripping in nostalgia for every single one of us.

Last Christmas – Wham

Because otherwise my Sister-In-Law would kill me and use my ribs as a xylophone to play this on.

Christmas Was Better In The 80’s – The Futureheads

The Futureheads resonate with this for me, can you guess when I was a kid? Also it fair zips along with their pop-punk swagger and vocals and is just perfect.

December Will Be Magic Again – Kate Bush

There is simply put no other song about Christmas that sounds anything like this, and I know it will make a friend of mine VERY happy to see it here.

Christmas Is Cancelled – The Long Blondes

I loved this band, I have so many memories attached to them, and this was on a playlist a friend made for me as a present the year it came out as they know I’m quite a miserable bastard.

500 Miles – The Proclaimers

I think it’s actually UK law that you can’t have a party without playing the lads from Leith. It’s part of our national DNA now.

Merry Christmas Everyone – Slade

When Slade wrote this they weren’t just doing a song, they were creating an ode to the great British traditions and they way we celebrate each year “are you waiting for the family to arrive . . . does your Granny always tell you the old ones are the best”. It is Christmas.
