The FW Awards Round Up

FashionWorked Awards Creator Ross Pollard Kicking Off The Night

Sunday was the 6th Annual FashionWorked Awards, held at The Century Soho on a beautiful warm summer’s evening, and was the biggest yet. I also unveiled the latest edition to the awards, all of our winners were presented with a hand crafted trophy “The Harry”. (Find the winners here)

Of course I kept it to the usual laid back style as I took over The Grooming Room for the evening, forgetting things (more of that later) and everything had the home spun feel of the events former life on a picnic blanket in Hyde Park, our drinks were only available with the hand made vouchers, the envelopes were knocked up on a printer and the winning cards were grabbed last minute from W H Smiths, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. This is a real event, even if it’s raw and unpolished.

I welcomed my judging panel including industry ICON Hilary Alexander; Candid Editor-In-Chief, Courtney Blackman; Stylist & Creative Director Rebekah Roy; Singer-Songwriter, Elyar; Television Presenters Stefanie Jones (Fashion One) and Prince Cassius (E!), and fashion writer, Jai’me Jan.

For the first time ever we even had a huge range of nominees attending including fashion designer, Joshua Kane; Safia Minney and Sven Segal of Po-Zu and half of the Hoxton Radio fashion team. Joining Candid, media included GQ, Marie Claire, Disorder, Noctis and Rion Magazine, and several stars were at the event including Naomi Grossman, who also presented an award as did international blogger, model and judge on Russian Next Top Model Leroy Dawkins. Other guests included renowned photographer, Joe Simpson; actor, Charlie Mills, musician, Harry Lee Dobson and Designers Omar Mansoor & Nico Didonna.

The event is designed to celebrate all of fashion with an important focus on independent labels and supporting and nurturing talented people that make the fashion industry what it is. What are my proudest moments? Well working with Rebekah Roy, who is one of the greatest talents in the industry, and of course doing something with Hilary Alexander, I managed to lose the envelope she was opening and like the star she is she just mimed it.

The other highlights include seeing Cimone, a truly outstanding label win Best Independent Designer, and Lucy Choi take the Title of Best Accessory Label, along side that I launched the Best Ethical Label award this year and the team from Po-Zu were there to pick up their award. But there was one thing that made me so proud and that was to recognise Alison Lowe with her Lifetime Achievement Award which I presented with founder of Diary Of A Clotheshorse Star Leroy Dawkins, as an industry we need to do more to show appreciation for those that help us make our dreams come true.

As I looked round the room it was a dream come true, we were all gathered to celebrate the thing that makes British fashion so great, the smaller businesses brimming with passion and creativity, I often say fashion can’t exist in a vacuum and it fills e with joy that so many people want the same.

I owe a few thank you’s, Century Soho & The Grooming Room for hosting us, my media partner Candid Magazine, and Ciroc Vodka for their support, Rion Magazine for coming on board as a sponsor and being my photographers, and three people who deserve individual mention Courtney Blackman, Sophie Exton & Laura McClusky from Forward PR, for being there at every turn for the last six months. I couldn’t of asked for a better PR team. Three more people I owe thanks to are Alice, Natasha & Holly who turned up in my hour of need to help with running the evening and helping all my guests have an amazing time.

About Ross Pollard

Since starting writing on my 31st birthday in 2011 I have held a number of positions at magazines and websites as well as regularly producing articles for numerous publications alongside contributing to TV & radio shows as a freelance fashion journalist including Hoxton Radio & Fashion One TV. Alongside writing, I have worked in other industries helping to design & grow digital platforms, develop businesses and support operations practices. This experience has proved invaluable in building an understanding of how businesses work, and the landscape in which retail, B2B commerce and other commercial operations develop. Knowledge of commercial interests has helped shape my fashion industry insights beyond critiquing of garments
