On a wet Soho afternoon during Fashion Week you need to have something to lift the mood, and so it was I found myself at Piste for the Style Notes by Basharatyan V & Velsoir presentation.Piste turns out to be the perfect setting for these garments with Basharatyan V dresses of deep velvets, dark and dense fabrics set off by colours so richly indulgent that they remind you of those days of Hollywood when Elizabeth Taylor reigned. If the Cleopatra of the 20th century had been around now she’d f loved this.
The whole presentation harks back to those days, a bunkered underground bar transformed into a ski chalet becomes the scene for a presentation that feels like any moment Connery and Caine will drive up in a Union Jack painted E-Type, tap out a Dunhill and order drinks for all while we dance the night away having the very tasty cocktails on offer. (By the way, Piste had the best Virgin Mojito I’ve had in London in a long time)
However, do’t be fooled by the setting into mis-interpreting the setting for the style. These are collections that fully understand the era of golden glamour and fully intend to bring it back. Both Basharatyan V & Velsoir understand the classic and have edited it in to the now. The masterstroke is using models as part of the part, you think to yourself, oh they look amazing, then see those are the labels in the presentation. It’ an oft asked question from people of how wearable these labels are these looks.
Well as they blend so seamlessly with the party around them we have living proof of that wearablity. The dresses shimmer with life, the two pieces give a hint of skin, a suggestion of the alluring. The dark tones each set each against whites, not quite monochrome providing a contrast there alongside some dashs of print. Velsoir deliver great tailoring mixed with modern line and form, creating focal points with accessories, I may have a new love
Both labels illustrate the diverse draw of London as a fashion capital, Basharatyan V (an FW fave that I’ve put in a couple of edits so far ) born of Russia and Velsvoir is a menswear label created by three brothers from Dubai who started 4 years ago with a single Bow Tie. I got the chance to talk with one of the brothers Zak during the presentation, and 5 minutes with him will make you know that here is a label who really do work from passion.
