Some things become tradition, and I always try to stop by the Avant Premier events during any given fashion week (both male and female). This was the reason I found myself heading off to Ham Yard Hotel the night before LFW AW16. Sadly it was not for the final set of ten pin bowling, no I won’t let that infamous draw with a friend go, 1 -1 is no way to leave it. However, back on track, it was well worth it as I got to meet Charlotte Zimbehl with her collection for the first time.
Charlotte Zimbehl launched her label in 2014, and has immediately hit on a recipe for success. Create beautiful chic garments that conjure an image of chic Parisian style tailoring with elegant flowing lines. They hit that largest requirement of a good coat for instance with these on you don’t just arrive, you make an entrance.
When you go with understated elegance you also have to know the impact comes from getting the two or three things you are doing perfectly set up, Charlotte Zimbehl is a person, designer and label that knows this and delivers it. Though the design may be wonderfully pared back, every detail is delivered in a way that still creates a statement piece.
There are certain things that present tell tale signs of the standards a label sets, Charlotte ticked every box, passionate, excited, wanting to tell you all about the label, but more than that, being able to discuss the making of the garments, tiny specific details about the stitching, the factory, the cloth, all present an eye for detail.
By the way, the fabrics are like a soft tactile cloud of sumptuous deep joy, and one of the reasons I always like to see designers work in person. You can tell so much from the feel of the material, the nap of the fabric, and the precision of the cut and sew. Many will try and shortcut these elements, Charlotte Zimbehl hasn’t, each is perfect. As ever it’s turned out worth accepting the invite as Avant haven’t let me down, yet another great label was discovered to appear on these humble web pages.
