Today was going to be a jokey piece about my friends upcoming wedding, they are just about to set a date. The Government has announced same sex marriages can take place from 29th March 2014 and after 15 years of waiting for the law to change one of the most wonderful couples I know can finally have their wedding (They refused a civil partnership as it wasn’t equality). I was going to play on the fact that after years of waiting their biggest battle seems to be who gets to choose the wedding suits. Trust me this is a hotly debated topic in their house.
However . . .
Just before starting my blog today I saw Uganda has finally legislated to make homosexuality illegal with certain aspects of the law making it possible to jail someone for life. Utterly disgusting & shocking.
Here at FW I have always felt that I wanted to build a community that didn’t care about the markers others would place on you, that FW is a place of equals, sexuality, race, religion, sex, weight, any form of prejudice is unwelcome at my door. I want to celebrate the world we have and the people in it.
With growing attacks on the LGBT community we need to stand by those who are threatened, I have stood up and stood with my friends here, and so I will stand up for and stand with everyone else. I will not support prejudice, with that in mind and the laws enacted in Russia there will be no replica of the coverage FW gave to London 2012 for Sochi 14.
We should always respond to hate with more love, more tolerance, more diversity, more unity, that is what FW is and will be, and we stand by all our brothers and sisters who feel the injustice of that hate.
I love fashion, but I love people more.
