5 Questions with Sally From Cambridge Raincoats

Today we have Sally from Cambridge Raincoats joining us for 5 Questions www.cambridgeraincoats.co.uk

We love that someone out there is mixing two of our biggest passions, Fashion & Cycling

Vintage or New?

Hmm depends. Love vintage but at 52 you have to be careful or you can just look horribly dated! If I can rock it, I do. When buying new, I try to buy less & buy the best quality I can to make it last. I have a 1980s edition of Vogue’s book ‘More Dash than Cash’ and it’s still brilliant. Nothing has dated.

Best place to shop?

Got a horror of shopping malls & high streets. In theory, like independent boutiques, markets, second-hand shops etc. Depends what I’m shopping for – clothes tend to be online from my preferred companies e.g. Lands’ End or Boden – sales pages usually. I know what suits me, buy classical, buy in sales. I’m heavy on shoes so prefer new & good quality – last pair from Modish in Cambridge. Even eBay e.g. belts, jackets. Scarves, rings, brooches, bracelets – vintage, often from Jemporium Vintage in Cambridge.

Is fashion a part of our cultural heritage?

Yes, I think it probably is but it is fascinating how different cultures and different classes have different perceptions of what fashion actually is. It always fascinates me how I might see something and think it’s tacky or boring and others unwaveringly go for the same thing – that’s not about style but impressing others or fitting into a social group (high class or low class). The word ‘fashion’ is often used synonymously for ‘style’ but they are clearly not the same thing. As Yves St Laurent said ‘Fashions fade but style is eternal’ (see reference to Vogue book above).

Fave piece of clothing/footwear you own?

I try not to have anything I don’t love because I either avoid wearing it (& don’t get my money’s worth) or I wear it and feel like crap – it’s always been important to me. I saw that same streak reappear in my daughter at 3 years old – she would have a tantrum or get undressed if she didn’t like what I put her in. It had a really strong effect on her. Favourite footwear – all my wedges!

Fave fashion quote?

Am I allowed 3? Hopefully & here they are:-

Vivienne Westwood:- ‘Buy Less, Choose Well, Make It Last’

Yves St Laurent:- ‘Fashions fade but style is eternal.’ (I believe it was him who said this)

Coco Chanel:- ‘ Elegance is not the prerogative of those who have just escaped from adolescence, but of those who have already taken possession of their future.’
